    Benjamim Taubkin
    [Brazil] [Rare UK performance]
    >

Benjamim Taubkin’s piano solo concert is based on his most recent work, recorded after the invitation of American label Adventure Music.

Performing a repertoire that includes original works as well as compositions by Tom Jobim, Coltrane, and Pixinguinha, Taubkin allows the extraordinary talent that earned him such praise as ‘delightfully minimalist’ (All Music Guide) to trully shine. The CD, which was recorded at the prestigious piano house Fazioli Sallon, is released in 2010 in the US and in Brazil.

His current projects as musician and director include: the Latin American collective América Contemporânea, the Orquestra Popular de Câmara, the choro ensemble Moderna Tradição, his work with the traditional music group Abaçai and his jazz project Trio + 1.

The direction which his career has taken mirrors his interests: the fusion of tradition and contemporary elements and the blending of the experience in Brazil and in contact with different cultures in Latin America and in the world.

Benjamim has been performing throughout the world. Last year he performed in London to a sell-out Vortex Jazz Club, being Critic’s Choice by Time Out and Metro.

“Like Egberto Gismonti or Hermeto Pascoal (who are obvious influences), Taubkin and his group take a traditional music as their starting point and use it to create carefully crafted soundscapes or elaborate musical excursions. Their sound is built around Taubkin’s gorgeous, delicate, Keith Jarrett-tinged piano. Sophisticated, satisfying, serious stuff.” (Songlines)

“Brazilian piano star making waves with his sensual mix of flush traditional arrangements, cutting edge technique and contemporary harmony makes his UK debut. Catch him here before he starts selling out bigger venues.” (Time Out)

“For this project (Cantos do nosso chão), pianist-arranger Taubkin has taken traditional music from Brazil to make a charming, dreamlike hybrid… A stunning album.” (The Guardian)

“Played in a tender, understated style that spoke from the heart, “Vibrações” was gracefully ecstatic; Jobim’s “Morro Não Tem Vez”, a lyric, gentle samba, was light but rich; “Sabiá Voou” evoked the attentive birds outside Benjamim’s window in São Paulo; and ‘Consolação’ went so deeply into the zone that I forgot I was supposed to be paying attention” (All About Jazz)

“Benjamim searches for the beauty. And he reaches it in every possible aesthetic element” (Jornal da Tarde)

“A tender and Gismontian journey through Brazilian music” (Estado de São Paulo)

“Benjamim’s compositions bring a total understanding of Brazilian music” (Gazeta Mercantil)

“Great arrangements were built around the lush piano of Benjamim Taubkin” (The New Tork Times)
