    Free Tallinn Trio

    Anne-Liis Poll: voice
Anto Pett: piano and prepared piano
    Jaak Sooäär: guitar and live-electronics

Free Tallinn Trio is a unique combination of a singer with unusually wide voice range (Anne-Liis Poll), a classically trained piano virtuoso (Anto Pett), who has been concentrated on free improvisation during last 20 years, and a jazz guitarist (Jaak Sooäär), who is one of the most well-known jazz musicians of the Baltics. The freely improvised music of Free Tallinn Trio could be described as contemporary impro chamber opera, but the main influences are simultaneously contemporary music and modern jazz improvisation. The different backgrounds of its members lead the trio to unexpected adventurous territories and help to avoid typical cliches of free improvisation.

“Poll was a superbly accomplished vocalist and the trio produced an integrated, rounded performance. She wove her detailed onomatopoeia into textures created by piano and guitar, contrasted by staccato passages and whispers that came haloed in Sooäär’s electronics. It was one of those fascinating, hypnotic performances that seemed to make time stand still.” (Stuart Nicholson about concert at Moers Festival in 2008, www.jazz.com)

“A splendid surprise! A group from Estonia, here making its first appearance on Leo Records. This is a free improvisation trio consisting of singer Anne-Liis Poll, pianist Anto Pett, and electric guitarist Jaak Sooäär. Free Tallinn Trio approaches free improvisation from a lyrical side: Poll possesses a strong opera singer’s voice and she can toy with recognizable lyricism and extends techniques. She makes me think of Lauren Newton and Viviane Houle, although her approach his less theatrical than the first one and less deconstructed than the second. The two instrumentalists also play on the dichotomy between classical and contemporary, although they never force the point. An excellent free improvisation CD, loaded with brilliant interactions and clearly displaying the trio’s enjoyment at performing in front of a German audience (outdoors, at the Moers festival). Recommended.” (monsieurdelire.com)
