“The London International Festival of Exploratory Music spans four venues from October 29th to November 7th, offering the most adventurous of musical spirits an epic trek around the four corners of the world. This year’s festival is arrayed between the shiny new Kings Place, eclectic arts centre Rich Mix, and the uber trendy Cafe Oto, in north London, and Wandsworth’s Lost Theatre. The festival features new Portuguese fado from Claudia Aurora, Vietnamese Cai Luong – theatre music song – from Huong Thanh, Poland’s Warsaw Village Band, and Siberia’s Namgar. This only scratches the surface of the list of artists, spanning from China to Angola, Estonia to Brazil. And here is a world exclusive preview of ‘Primavera’ from Claudia Aurora debut’s album, ‘Silencio’.” (Songlines Magazine Podcast 79, released on 02 September 2011, including highlights from the October 2011 issue of Songlines magazine) Due to a lack of funding this year it has been necessary to reduce the number of shows at the London International Festival of Exploratory Music. It is therefore with great regret that we have had to cancel Pascal Comelade’s performance on the 5th November. We apologise to fans of Pascal Comelade who have bought tickets for the show. Refunds can be got via Kings Place. Just got the very disappointing news that Arts Council England is not supporting this year’s edition of the London International Festival of Exploratory Music… depressing… Arts Council England says: “Sustain is our response to the impact of the recession on arts organisations whose sustainability is important in delivering our mission of great art for everyone.” Shall we learn, understand, accept or respect that the kind of artists who play at LIFEM do not do “great art for everyone”? Is X-Factor the answer for what is “great art for everyone”? Sustainability, really? Due to unforeseen circumstances Fernanda Takai (Brazil) will be unable to perform at the London International Festival of Exploratory Music (LIFEM) this November. However, we are delighted to announce that Benjamim Taubkin (Brazil) will be performing at the festival, in what is a rare UK visit by the Brazilian minimalist jazz pianist.

Building on last year’s inaugural festival, the London International Festival of Exploratory Music (LIFEM) continues its musical journey with exciting exploratory sounds from all over the world. It begins by celebrating the 75th birthday of composer Terry Riley, the father of American minimalism. Terry takes the stage with Mercury Music award-winning tabla player and multi-instrumentist Talvin Singh and progressive saxophonist George Brooks, on what is a rare visit to Europe. The festival ends with the oldest active early music group in Europe, Hortus Musicus, from Estonia. They celebrate two more 75th birthdays: those of Estonian Arvo Pärt and Georgian Giya Kancheli. In between comes the UK premiere of Flemish Belgium minimalist composer Wim Mertens, a rare UK performance by French Catalan musician Pascal Comelade, the only UK performance of UK composer Gavin Bryars, the UK premiere of Estonian power folk band Svjata Vatra and the UK premiere of Brazilian singer Fernanda Takai, best known as the vocalist of Brazilian super group Pato Fu. The London International Festival of Exploratory Music (LIFEM) which took place in London at Kings Place in November was amongst the live concert highlights of 2009 for MusicalCriticism.com (the new source for concert and opera reviews, articles and interviews on the web). Due to unforeseen circumstances Mabrouk Band (Israel), Shira U’tfila (Serbia) and Madame Mim (Brazil) will be unable to perform at London International Festival of Exploratory Music this November. However, we are delighted to announce that Les Yeux Noirs (France), Monster Ceilidh Band (UK) and Daniel Peixoto (ex-Montage, Brazil) will be their replacements, in what is a rare UK performance by the French gypsy/klezmer virtuoso ensemble, the London premiere of Newcastle’s happy energetic non-stop danceable Ceilidh band, and the European premiere of the shockingly sexy electro-punk solo project by the Brazilian MTV outrageous superstar.
